LOSS AND FOUND
By Terry Berliner
Synopsis: Loss and Found is a dramatic 6-actor play (5 women, 1 man) about what we see and cannot
see, what we feel and are afraid to know.
MUSICALS
ALONE IN THE U.S.
Book by Terry Berliner
Music by Bobby Cronin
Lyrics by Bobby Cronin and Terry Berliner
Synopsis: Alone in the U.S. is a 9-person, pop-style, ensemble musical that explores aspiration
(following a dream), and isolation (how we often feel on the journey). Because of its subject matter,
ensemble nature, and style, it is not traditional in format. Rather than following a protagonist’s
journey, it investigates a culture’s journey. The 9-person cast is like a microcosm of a continent
and our Global Millennials. Alone in the U.S. explores with humor, levity, and weight, our highly
evolved, technologically advanced culture, and its struggles with achievement, patience, and
feelings of isolation. And, even though every member of the ensemble feels increasingly alone
in their experience, they are actually united through interweaving dialogue, song, and emotion.
Production History: Originally conceived and produced in New York City at Collaborative Arts Project 21
(CAP 21), in the fall 2013 Creative Ensemble class. Further developed in the spring of 2014 in a reading
series at Marymount Manhattan College, with the student-run Musical Theatre Association where it
won the 2014 Outstanding Program of the Year Award. In January of 2015 a reading was staged with
international musical theatre students at the New York Film Academy in New York City. In March of
2015 a student presentation was staged at the University of Cumbria, Carlisle, U.K. with a translated
script entitled Alone in the U.K.. And, a workshop of Alone in the U.S. was staged at Penn State in
June 2016.
SWING SISTERS
Conceived by Lynnette Barkely
Book and Lyrics by Lynnette Barkley and Terry Berliner
Music and Lyrics by Coty Cockrell
Synopsis: In San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, today, a 13 year-old girl named Lilly (with her Grandmother)
sets out to find a saxophone for her band class at middle school. They enter a local pawnshop and
discover the perfect saxophone. Little do they know that the woman who first owned this sax, Olivia,
was a member of the famed first integrated all-female swing band, The International Sisters of Swing.
Thus, Lillie in the present and Olivia, in the past, embark on parallel journeys of musical adventure
and discovery. Along this road they come to understand how the bonds of friendship and the power
of music, handed down through generations, can change everything. The spirit of the women who
fought for and expressed themselves through their music is resurrected as Olivia and a band of
audacious women come alive to pass on the heart and soul of their music to one little girl with
a big dream.
Production History: Developed at the 2014 Rhinebeck Writer's Retreat.
SUDDENLY SUPERNATURAL
A Musical Adaptation
Based on the book "Suddenly Supernatural"
by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel
Book by Terry Berliner and Joel Adlen
Lyrics by Joel Adlen and Leonard Moors
Music by Leonard Moors
Synopsis: Kat, with all the horribleness of being the new kid in town, tries to cope with middle-school
and being the farthest thing from the in crowd. To make matters worse, Kat struggles with having a
loving but "un-cool" mom who happens to interact with dead people. Given the possibility that she
too may possess this very gift, Kat and her best friend come to terms with their own talents while
helping free the spirit of a girl trapped at their school.
Production History: In development.
IN THE MAKING
Conceived and Written by Terry Berliner
Synopsis: In the Making is a new Broadway musical about the making of a new Broadway musical.
The story begins when a hot, young, extreme sports videographer is invited into the rehearsal
room by an ambitious producer. The videographer has been enlisted to record the entire creative
process. His videos are then simultaneously broadcast on the Internet. The tumultuous journey begins
at the press event right before the first day of rehearsal and ends after opening night. And, even
though it seems like a place where no one in their right mind would want to stay, the power of live
theatre embraces everyone who touches it and changes their lives completely.
What that videographer records isn’t real. It's theatre. But some people out in cyberspace, and
even in New York, believe that this is how it is done.
Production History: In development.
